The Boot Inn could date from the early 17th century but the earliest mention of it is in 1769. There is a nearby malthouse and the house would have brewed its own beer well into the 19th century. The name could come from an earlier publican being a bootmaker or it may refer to the long boots worn by riders and coachmen. The building was originally thatched but this was destroyed in a fire of 1929 after which re-roofing was carried out in slate. The inn was the political headquarters of John Benett, of Pyt House, for his successful election campaign of 1819; hence the slogan 'Benett and Independence' carved on the stone wall facing the road.
