Sir Alfred Mond, Chairman on Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd, bought most of Landford Manor Estate in south-eastern Wiltshire in 1917. A friend of Lloyd George, he was created a baron in 1928 and took his title from the royal forest of Melchet that once included Landford, becoming Baron Melchet of Landford.
