Question
When was the village of Imber abandoned?
Question asked on
11 April 2002
Answer
The village was finally evacuated on 17th December 1943. The residents had been given six weeks to leave by the War Office on 1st November 1943. The village lay between army training grounds and was already owned by the War Office. It was required to help prepare the American Army for the invasion of Europe. Everyone who left was fully convinced that they would be allowed to return at the end of the war but, despite a long campaign this has never happened.
