In 1938 there were plans for a senior school to be built at South Park, once part of the grounds of the Manor House, but these were disrupted by the Second World War. It was not until 1962 that a secondary modern school, with 154 pupils, opened on the site. The school became comprehensive in 1973,with 360 pupils. This was not a large enough number for a fully comprehensive school so a unique link was established with Dauntsey's public school for the teaching of ceratin subjects. The catchment area included West Lavington, Urchfont, Worton, Marston and Tilshead, as well as Market Lavington and Easterton. The school had a successful Farm Unit and a new barn was built for this in 1990, with the aid of grants and a donation from a local businessman.
By 1992 there were about 450 pupils aged 11-16 and the link with Dauntseys enabled a 6th form to be taught there. Staff from the independent school taught music, science and languages at Lavington School while academic 'A' level work was taught at Dauntseys. The Farm Unit was managed as a viable business enterprise with income making it self sufficient, and with many children involved. It included seven acres of grazing land, nursery gardens, a milking parlour and dairy, pig pens and two large greenhouses. They are members of the Rare Breeds Trust and opened a farm shop. In 2004 the number of students at the school had increased to 687.
