County Secondary Modern School, Durrington

Until 1922 all children aged from 7 up to 14 were educated in the same school. In 1922 a senior school for children aged over 11 was opened in Bulford Road. In 1944, in line with government policy, this became a secondary modern school. In the 1950s the number of pupils was increasing and a larger building was needed. This was built at the north-eastern corner of the village in Recreation Road, at a cost of £118,732. The school opened on September 7th 1959 and had accommodation for 480 pupils. In the early 1970s extensive additions were made to the school buildings, and in 1974 the school became a comprehensive, being known as Upper Avon School.
