Larkhill Primary School, Durrington

With the increasing population at Larkhill Camp there was great pressure on the Infant and Junior Schools in Durrington village. A school was planned for the Camp, which meant that children could be educated in their own community instead of having to travel to the nearby village. This school was operational by 1941 and was called the Garrison Junior School. The Larkhill County Junior and Infant School followed, built for 400 pupils and costing £86,638. It was taken into use on April 30th 1962. There were 294 pupils here in 1992 and 269 in 2004. From the junior school, pupils moved on to Durrington Walls Secondary School or to Bishop Wordsworth's School (boys) and the South Wilts Grammar (girls). There was also the Avon Dale private school near Amesbury.
