The school is mentioned in Kelly's Directory of Wiltshire in 1855, and in the inspection of 1858 it is described as a schoolroom attached to the Independent chapel. At this time between 20 and 30 children were taught there by a mistress. It was still running as a day school in 1867, but in 1875 it is listed as a Sunday School only. It is possible that the day school closed in 1874 when the new church school was built.
