This was doubtless one of the two schools in Idmiston parish in 1783, which charged small fees, taught the catechism, with one teaching reading only and the other reading and writing. A charity school from the bequest of John Andrews) at Porton is mentioned in 1798 and in 1818 it was attended by some children from Idmiston village. It was reported in 1846 that there was a Sunday and day school here with 15 pupils being taught by a mistress. The expenses were met by fees and subscriptions. In the survey and inspection of Wiltshire schools of 1858/9 there is no school listed at Porton and it was said that it was too far for the children to go to Idmiston school and some of them went to the school at Winterbourne Earls. This is strange as Idmiston School was closer to Porton than the one at Winterbourne Earls and it is likely that some Porton children would have gone to Idmiston They certainly would have from 1869 when the new school was built at Idmiston.
