In 1850 the old Church of England school was built near St. Leonard's church by adapting two cottages. It was large enough for sixty children & in 1859 there were about fifty pupils. They were taught by a certificated teacher & instructed in the '3Rs' & scripture. The school was supported both by the rector, the Rev. G. Powell & by the local squire Joseph Everett. Every year the accounts showed a deficit, & each time this was paid by the rector.

In 1872 it was proposed to build a new school close to the new church, in order to comply with the 1870 Education Act. Money was raised by selling the old building, which was then converted into a private house.
