A number of references in historical sources for Winterslow indicate the existence from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries of small schools established as a result of charitable bequests and donations, as in the case of R.W.G. Thistlethwayte's gift of a tenement to serve as a parish schoolhouse in 1689, or operating as dame schools.
