There is little detailed knowledge of the early schools which existed in South Newton parish, but the following information is derived from a small number of relevant statistical returns:
In 1818 there were three dame schools in South Newton parish, with a total of 75 pupils, 35 of whom were the children of paupers.
In 1833 two small schools, attended by seven boys and seventeen girls, were in operation.
In 1846 a dame school was attended by ten pupils; at this time South Newton National School, described below, was also in existence.
