Hindon's first school was in 1783, endowed by Alderman Beckford. It was at that time a free school. The next reference to schools in Hindon came in 1818.There were two schools with 40 pupils that were taught by two different mistresses, one was paid £10.00 a year by Lord Calthorpe and the other £12.12 shillings by William Beckford. By 1846 Lord Calthorpe also supported two Sunday schools and two day schools that were attended by 75 boys and 63 girls, the teachers being a master and mistress. In 1854 Lady Octavia Shaw-Stewart gave money to build a school and school house, founded as a Church of England school; this became Hindon National School.
