As early as 1548 some children were receiving education in the parish. In this year, a chaplain at All Saint's Church was said to have been teaching children within the church. In 1552, a reference in the Survey of Chantries indicated that the chantry chaplain taught children. The north aisle of the church was used up until the 19th century as a place to teach children. Two 'elementary' schools, with seven pupils each existed in 1818; in all probability these were dame schools; a term to describe a small private school taught by women, often in their own homes.
