In 1818 there was a day school at Charlton, with at least 20 pupils. This was partly maintained by a bequest from Lady Winchcombe from 1706.
A subsequent day school was in existence in 1833, which was mainly paid for by Thomas, earl of Suffolk and Berkshire.
There were two dame schools in the parish in the mid-19th century. Dame schools were privately run small schools; they were often run by women who taught children in their own homes.
