A successful carpenter from Broad Town, Thomas Spackman, founded an Education Foundation in 1782. He left money to use for education in Broad Town; it is thought teaching of some sort took place in his house at Thornhill. In 1819 at least 60 children attended the school; it was sold in 1857. Spackman's Educational Foundation, as it would now be known, was looked after by a board of eight governors. At the start of the 20th century the money was distributed through prize giving at Broad Town and Clyffe Pypard schools.
