Early Schools, Chilmark

The Sunday school was, as is often the case in small rural communities, very popular. In 1846 it taught 102 children. There were also two dame schools recorded as existing in that year, which between them looked after 65 children. The costs of running these schools in the mid 19th century were met through subscriptions and fees the parents paid. In 1859 there was still one dame school where 30 infants were taught in a cottage.
