The first recorded school in the parish was a Sunday school in 1798. The school had received a bequest from the Reverend John Woodruffe of £4. 18s. 8d. and by 1818 was teaching 10 pupils. In 1846 15 children went to the school and a teacher was paid £10 a year. This school seems to have closed before 1858. There were also dame schools in the parish; schools taught by women in their homes, in order to supplement the income of the family, and between 20 and 30 children were taught in one by an elderly woman in 1858 that had an endowment of over £5 a year.
