A Boarding School existed in Tilshead in the mid 18th century and had 63 pupils by 1779, including Henry Hunt, a future radical politician prominent in the 19th century. It was flourishing in 1819 and was known as Tilshead Academy but had only 6 pupils by 1833 and subsequently closed. In 1807 a detailed map of Tilshead was produced by the school, showing the location of all the houses with owners and occupiers, demonstrating an exercise in surveying.

There was also a Sunday school in the early 1800s maintained by voluntary subscriptions. By 1833 two Day Schools accommodated 37 pupils and one of these may have become the National School.
