An 1818 report states that Nettleton was very much an abandoned parish with little or no resources owing to the introduction of machinery in nearby cloth towns. A dame school was opened on Sundays and week days in 1846 when 34 pupils were taught by a mistress; voluntary subscriptions and the payment of fees paid for the expenses.
