Early Schools, Wingfield

A private school in Wingfield was run by Reverend Edward Spencer and existed in the early 1800s. This school was attended by 30 pupils. Two of the pupils were Thomas De Quincey, later an author, and Edward Grinfield, who later become a biblical scholar. They became friends during their time at this school and together wrote a school paper called ‘The Observer.’

In 1818 a Sunday school existed which had 30 pupils and in 1846 a Sunday school was attended by 32 boys and 35 girls who paid a fee (2d.) and were taught by two mistresses. A dame school also existed and was managed by a Master and Mistress and had 37 pupils.
