There were two small dame schools flourishing in Chirton by 1808 with each having a capacity of about 10 children who were taught to read. One of these schools still existed in 1818 with 25 pupils ten of whom were supported by an unnamed benefactress. By 1833 there were two small daily schools which together were able to provide education for around 30 children who were supported by their parents.
