The earliest mention of a school at Patney is by the Reverend George Wells in letters dating from 1773 to 1794, although he only mentions the possibility of educating a small number of boys during the later years of his life. In 1808 there was a boarding and day school for about forty children and in 1818 a woman taught about six of the poorer children.
