Day School, Berwick St Leonard

In 1818 there was a day school in Berwick said to be attended by 20 children, presumably mostly from other parishes since the population of Berwick was only 44 in 1821. There was no school in the parish in 1833. A national report compiled by an Inspector in 1859 said that there were only a few cottages in the village and that ‘the children go elsewhere (one to Fonthill Bishop and one to Hindon)’. The situation is still the same, the children in the village mostly attending one of these two schools.
