In 1818 there were two schools in Chute parish. One had 30 pupils and the second was a dame school with 6 pupils. In 1841 the two schools had 48 pupils. From at least 1841, possibly earlier, a room at Standen was used partly as a school, affiliated to the National Society and in 1846 there were 72 pupils. A new school was built between Chute and Standen in 1858, also included pupils from Chute Forest. There were 48 pupils in 1871 and by 1908/9 there were an average of 82 attending, this was down to 76 in 1937/8. The school closed in 1978. Until 1902 the school received some income from the Mary Scroggs Charity which provided money to be used for religious education.
