There were no day-schools in Huish until c. 1843 when a schoolroom was erected on the east side of Barn Cottage. In 1859 an elderly woman taught about ten children in it. According to the Kelly’s Directory 1875, Oare and Huish had united as one district and the small number of children living in Huish attended the school at Oare.
At some point, the old school became the village reading room. This was established by 1910, as it is recorded on the 1910 inland revenue map. The room was integrated into Barn Cottage in 1987.
A new school was built at Oare in 1914; the location was just inside the Huish parish boundary. By 1970 only one or two Huish children attended.
More information on the school at Oare can be found in the Community History entry for Wilcot.
