Originally built in Park Lane as a National School in 1857, on a site where a cottage, used as a dame school, had stood. The cost was £1,900 and this was partly funded by a government grant of £776. Attendance at the school was 255 older boys and girls and 103 infants. The annual running costs of the school were £113, which was made up of staff salaries of £45 for the master, £30 for the mistress and £20 for the infants' mistress, and £18 for heating, lighting, replacement furniture, slates, books and exercise books. The school was not transferred to Wiltshire County Council until 1926. In 1927 it was designated an infant school. By the 1960s there was an Annexs in Greenway Lane but even so only the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Infants and the 1st year Juniors could be accommodated; the older Juniors were educated at Ivy Lane School.
At Easter 1971 Mr M.G. Robson was appointed Head Teacher with the task of transferring children from the existing two sites into a new school at The Oaks. The old school closed in July 1973 and children moved to the present building in the northern part of the town in September 1973.From then it became a junior school for children aged from 5 to 11 years. At first numbers were low as parents with children at Ivy Lane School wanted their younger children to continue to transfer to that school. However after the first few years numbers increased and the three years of older Juniors had a full complement of pupils. The new school was open plan with classrooms in pairs so that teachers also worked in pairs. In 2006/7 there were 274 children on the school roll
