The Baptist chapel was built c.1839 and an attached school had been built by the 1850s. In 1858 there were between 50 and 70 children attending, more than twice the number at the church National School. In 1886 it was recorded that the National School only had a small attendance because of the presence of the British School; about 75% of the village was non-conformist. In 1889 the average attendance was 35 and Miss Applegate was the schoolmistress, but by 1895 the post of schoolmistress was vacant. It was decided to combine the two schools and the British School closed. The 23 children from the British School joined the 24 at the National School on 1st March 1895, but were not taught the Church of England catechism.
