Origins were in 1845 as a British School and in 1859 a school was built next to the chapel on the Common - was also known as the Common School. The school was extended in 1899 and survived a further 60 years, closing in 1959. It was taken over by Wiltshire County Council in 1902. In 1931 the senior children moved to the Avenue Senior School and Newtown remained as mixed junior and infants' school until 1959
