The first known school was that taught by the chantry priest of St. Laurence before 1540. In 1577 Simon Forman, an astrologer, is listed as a schoolmaster in the town. In the early 17th century W. Lockier and Giles Daniell were teaching, as was William Gough by the middle of that century.
