By the early 17th century there was a free school that originated from an endowment by Walter Fynemore, who died in 1557.The school was still in existence in the early 19th century. A school founded by Sir John Ernle of Whetham in the 17th century for 5 boys survived until 1829. By his will of 1670 William Woodroffe left money to educate 5 boys free of charge. This school was also closed in 1829.
