This was first mentioned in 1596 and was in the Sheepfair, now the Triangle. In the first part of the 17th century the master, Robert Latimer taught the philosopher Thomas Hobbes and, later, the antiquarian and writer John Aubrey in the evenings until 9.00 p.m. In 1818 there were around 150 pupils at the school.
