In 1634 Robert Arch gave 11 acres of land for the general good of Malmesbury parish and the income from this was used to provide a free school. In 1818 the income of £55 was used for a school of 150 pupils. By 1834 the income was reduced to £33 which provided a free school for 45 girls in a room over the porch of the abbey church. Subjects at that time included lace making. The school was still open in 1873 but closed soon afterwards.
