There was a school in The Green for children from St. Mary's parish by 1848 but this was used only for boys after 1849, when a school for girls and infants was opened on the east side of Herd Street. In 1858 the school on The Green had one master and 70 boys while the Herd Street school had one mistress with 60 girls and 60 infants. By 1867 the boys had moved to a new building on the Herd Street site. In the early 20th century there was an average of over 270 pupils at the school each year. In 1918 there was a reorganistion and parish boundaries were no longer applicable. St. Mary's became the school for girls and infants in the town while the boys went to St. Peter's. In 1962 the older girls moved into the former Grammar School building in The Parade with the boys from St. Peter's. The infants remained in the Herd Street school until 1974 when it was closed and the pupils moved to the new St. Mary's Infants' School in George Lane.
