18th century Charity Schools, Devizes

In the 18th century there was a number of charitable bequest for the education of small numbers of children. Examples are; a charity of 1743 for educating 6 poor girls; a charity of 1774 to teach 20 boys; a charity of 1788 for the teaching of reading and needlework to 7 girls of St. John's parish. There were other monies given to educate boys and girls and also to provide apprenticeships. With the Free School and Sunday Schools it was said that by the late 18th century most of the children of the town were attending schools.
