By 1867 there was a Government School of Art in the Assize Courts in Northgate Street and by 1880 there was a branch of the school in the Town Hall. By 1889 it had been renamed the Government School of Science and Art and was being maintained by the Devizes Borough technical committee, with Wiltshire County Council support. The school had workshops in the former British School by 1895 and a chemistry laboratory and art room by 1898. In 1906 the building was sold and the proceeds given to the county council for the new secondary school (Devizes Grammar School) that was then being built. The pupils went to the Grammar School, which took over the functions of the old school.
