In 1938 it was decided to relieve pressure on Highbury Avenue School by providing a new junior and infants' school for 250 children. A six acre site on the Devizes Road was bought and the school, with two junior classrooms, 2 infants' classrooms and two halls was completed in 1940. In the early 1950s the school roll averaged around 300 pupils. In 1972 under the re-organisation of schools in the west of Salisbury the greatly extended school became Avon Middle School.
