The school was founded in the former Quaker meeting house in Gigant Street in the early 19th century. By 1830 there was a master for boys and a mistress for girls but by 1859 between 140 and 150 infants were being taught in one room by one mistress, who was described as being of 'the old school of teaching'. In 1870 there were around 105 children paying between one penny and fourpence for their schooling. The school closed in 1878.
