The Wesleyan Methodist Society acquired the Salt Lane Presbyterian meeting house (built 1662), repaired it and opened it as a school by 1845. In 1849 there were 135 boys under one master and three pupil teachers. The teacher is described as 'good and energetic' but the premises as 'dark and dismal'. In the 1860s the average attendance was around 70 and the school closed in 1870. The building was sold by the Methodists in 1882.
