Formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of Westwood County Girls' Secondary Modern School and St. Thomas's Boys' School to create a mixed upper school of 800 students, aged from 13 to 19. The school is a Church of England linked Foundation School that takes pupils from Avon, Wilton, and Fisherton Manor Middle Schools as part of a pyramid that includes Broad Chalke, Great Wishford, Dinton, Steeple Langford, Barford, Pembroke Park, Woodlands, Wilton, Highbury and Bemerton First Schools. The Artsmark award, for excellence in the provision of visual and expressive art, has recently been received and the school owns and runs its own evening sports centre. The Sixth Form are based in a separate block with two study rooms with ICT facilities and a common room. Over 50% of the students choose to stay on into the Sixth Form and they have their own council. In 2002 there were 661 children on the school roll. Within the school grounds are sculptures created by students at the school.
