By 1875 Miss Sarah Louisa Jarman had a school at Montague Villa, Wilton Road, and in an advertisement of 1880 she is described as the Principal of a school that offered study for Universal Local, College of Preceptors and Trinity College examinations. There were resident German and English governesses and masters attended for French, Latin, Mathematics, Music and Dancing. The year was divided into three equal terms of 13 weeks and financial terms were said to be moderate. In 1889 the school was advertised as the Montague College for Girls with a large ventilated school room, 70 feet long, 22 feet wide and 18 feet high, separate classrooms, a large drill hall and dormitories. The school now also offered preparation for music examinations.
Miss Jarman remained Principal but by 1911 was advertising the school under her own name at 10 Wilton Road. This may indicate a decrease in the size of the school as Miss Jarman became older and the last mention of the school is in 1920. In 1925 a school run by Miss Mildred E. Constable was advertised at 10 Wilton Road.
