This was built to the south of Gas Lane (originally Mutton Lane) in 1859 and John Pilkington was the first master. The school was for the children of non-conformists and by 1871 there were 52 boys and 18 girls at the school.Other masters mentioned in directories are William Simpkins in 1867 and John Horswill in 1875. In 1874 the school was in active competition for pupils with the National School, St. Mary's, and lost several pupils to that school. The British School was forced to close in 1875 through lack of pupils and the building was used for infants as the National School for Infants from 1875.
