Owing to overcrowding in the mixed all age National School a new infants' school was opened in 1884. It consisted of one large schoolroom, 36 by 20 feet, which would accommodate 100 children. The school was under a separate mistress, Miss Dawson, and 77 children were transferred. By 1901 increased numbers at the school meant that an extra classroom had to be built and the school now had accommodation for 150 infants, although this was reduced to 140 in 1902 when new guidelines were introduced. In October 1903 the school was taken over by Wiltshire County Council as the local education authority and in 1907 there were 90 infants on the school roll. The school closed in 1930 when the infants were transferred to the modernised all age St. Mary's School.
