In 1938 a site had been bought for a Church of England secondary modern school but this had never been built. The county secondary school opened in 1958 on this site and took all children over the age of 11 from the Church of England elementary school, which then became a junior school. Children over the age of 11 in local village schools were also transferred to the new school. The school was enlarged in 1960-61 and it became a comprehensive in 1974 as Stonehenge School. The school took pupils from 11 to 16 years, did not have a sixth form and in 1991 there were 405 students. Amesbury grew rapidly during the 1990s and by 1998 there were 644 students. New buildings have been added to create an Upper School while a sports centre, used by the school, has been built alongside. In 2002 there were 613 students, aged from 11 to 16 years.
