This began as a Sunday School near the Congregational Church in Crow Lane and in 1835 there were 156 children. They expanded into running a day school and became affiliated to the Union of British Schools. In 1858 between 150 and 170 children were being taught and the school was praised for its good teaching and equipment. The school closed between 1871 and 1875.
