Market House School, Mere

This was the predecessor of William Barnes's School in the Cross Loft over the Market House. The schoolmaster, J. Robertson, ran it from January 1808 to 1822 or 1823 and catered for 'Young Gentlemen who will be boarded and instructed in the Latin and English languages, Writing in the different hands, Arithmetic through all its branches with the Mathematics and Book Keeping.' The terms were 22 guineas (£23.10p) per year and there was no entrance examination.
