This school at Chicksgrove was funded by a bequest from the will of Alice Coombe (1740), which also funded the Tisbury Free School. From 1752 a schoolmistress was being paid £3 a year to teach 6 children in her own home. The children, aged between 4 and 10 years, were taught to read. The children stayed at school for four years but there was no fixed age for starting school. In 1833 a schoolmistress was paid £6 a year to teach 12 children. The school closed in 1843 when the children were transferred to the new National School at Tisbury and the income from the charity was given to the National School until 1881.
