In 1842 the Congregational chapel in the High Street was superseded by the new chapel on Zion Hill. The old chapel became a dame school for the children of non-conformists and later became a British School. Under the 1870 Education Act the school became an official Board School, where the religious education provided was not dependent on one particular sect of Christianity. The school closed at Christmas 1875, as a result of financial problems, and the children were transferred to the National School. The headmaster, Mr Toms, had resigned his headship and was offered, and accepted, the headship of the National School in March 1876.
