In 1786 £100 of the £200 bequeathed by Emma Noyes was to pay for teaching girls at Charlton. The interest on this sum paid for a mistress to teach between 6 and 8 children. This was a very small school for girls and only one child per family was allowed to attend. Towards the middle of the century numbers increased when children were taught in a temporary building at the expense of Horatio, Lord Nelson. Between 40 and 50 children were here in 1858 when the new National school was opened and the children transferred there.
