By her will of 1722 Susanna, widow of Sir Richard Holford, left £200 for the education of poor children in Avebury. Part of the money had been received by 1733 and the first schoolmaster was appointed in 1736. Four cottages in South Street were bought as an endowment to provide an income for the schoolmaster's salary. Children were taught in the chuch and by 1783 sixteen children were being educated in this way. In the early 19th century between 10 and 50 children were being educated in the church. The school was superseded by the National school and the charitable funds were diverted to that school.
