Stockley Church School, Calne Without

The school was built in 1855 or 1856 at the expense of John Guthrie, the vicar of Calne. A teacher's house was added in 1858 when about 40 children were taught by an untrained mistress. It seems that the school did not come under the National Society and may have been similar to the dame schools that existed earlier in the century. In 1870 the vicar, John Duncan, said that the school was doing more harm than good and, with government approval, he closed it. The children were transferred to Holy Trinity School at Calne and Heddington School.
